Lubelia Alycea: One Hundred Years by J.E. Spina spans from the early 20th century to the present. This historical novel is based on the life of the author’s grandmother. It follows a family's odyssey as they leave their native home in Madeira, where Lubelia, a feisty and determined young girl, struggles to face losing her father to the flu. Along with her twin brother Antonio, she must navigate the challenges of growing up during a time of war and uncertainty. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to a rich and diverse cast of characters, each with their unique struggles and triumphs. We see Lubelia grow into a strong-willed and independent young woman determined to forge her path in life. We also meet Antonio, who is content to follow in his father's footsteps as a merchant marine but ultimately finds himself caught up in the chaos of World War II.
This well-crafted novel has a finely drawn historical setting that takes readers through the difficult times of two world wars and the Great Depression. Lubelia instantly wins the hearts of readers. She is elaborately explored, from her anxiety about her father’s illness to her escapades with her twin brother to her struggles in a new world; she is depicted as a strong girl who eventually grows up to be a woman who allows nothing to stand between her and her dreams. J.E. Spina writes about family dynamics with intelligence, highlighting the fragile threads that bind them together with themes of love, loss, grief, war, and relationships. The author’s exploration of women's experiences during times of war is impeccably accomplished. Within this context, the author creates a heroine who refuses to be defined by circumstances. Lubelia Alycea: One Hundred Years is an inspiring and heartwarming family saga filled with humanity, adventure, and heart.
