Type designer Ed Austin’s lonesome life is suddenly stirred by a dozen forgotten letters, written by a nineteenth-century woman named Lydia Starbird, in a barn of an old Maine farmhouse. An unusual romance has developed when Ed finally encounters Lydia herself. Is she someone Ed believes to be real? Or does she just exist only in his imagination?
"Lydia" demands a serious suspension of disbelief. The book shows the absurdity of romance that defies the boundaries of time and place. Nevertheless, it is an interesting read. It has its pleasures too when it comes to the level of enjoyment. Brian Willson takes us to a different world that not everybody dares to visit. Logic prevents us from believing in something that does not add up in this romantic fantasy novel. However, for those who wish to suppress real-life traumas, reading "Lydia" can be an experience that makes you stop for a while and think. The first few pages of the book can be a bit boring. In the beginning, cheesy dialogues can be very challenging. But don’t give up just yet. The plot may seem too familiar and fails to strike your fancy but there is more about the story core than the idea of traveling through time. It is actually a poignant reminder of the choices we make and the chances we miss in life. You can find gold in this book that manages to provide intriguing details about its main characters. The truth of the matter is that it can take you on a very emotional ride.
