“Like you, I am different.” We are all different, uniquely so. Sarah Versher’s story, Magnificent and Different, shares all manner of differences. Some see and read with their hands because they’re blind. Others listen through a hearing aid, but they can still listen. Then some need a wheelchair to get around. Despite our differences, visual or invisible, we are still able to feel and share our emotions and learn new things. Despite our differences, life is full of surprises for all of us.

Sarah Versher’s picture book, Magnificent and Different: Celebrating Friends With Differences, is a great way to introduce young readers to the beauty we all possess despite our differences. The plot introduces the unique qualities of different people, from those who are deaf to those who are blind and those who need help getting around. The language is simple; the author uses basic sentences to bullet the key points. The illustrations are abstract but colorful and vibrant and help the story move forward as young people learn about the many unique qualities that define us. Instead of human children, the illustrator shares images of animals in bold colors to signify their uniqueness. The important aspect of acceptance is the statements suggesting that despite their differences, they should all play and eat treats together. Why? So “We can appreciate our differences” because it’s “cool.” Using language that young readers can relate to is another way to help youngsters accept the theme and learn to be accepting of others. Beautifully told and presented.
