Jennifer S. Alderson's novel Marked for Revenge (Zelda Richardson Mystery Series Book 3) is a thriller set in the Netherlands, Croatia, Italy, and Turkey. American Zelda Richardson is a young art researcher working temporarily at the Amstel Modern museum in Amstelveen, near Amsterdam. In August and September 2018, twenty-seven postmodern works of art are stolen from twelve Dutch museums, including the Amstel Modern. Zelda's neighbor, renowned artist Gabriella Tamic, vanishes. Zelda herself is found unconscious in Gabriella’s apartment and is suspected of being involved with an international ring of art thieves. In desperation, she appeals for help from art investigator Vincent de Graaf, well known for his success in recovering stolen art. The tension builds as Zelda and Vincent uncover an intricate web of art thieves, forgers, and a Croatian criminal organization.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Jennifer S. Alderson's Marked for Revenge: An Art Heist Thriller for its intriguing plot and Zelda's character development. Zelda’s dream is to be an art curator. Determined to prove she is not an art thief she finds the courage to confront terrifying and perilous situations. Her love for and knowledge of art and her abilities as a researcher transform her into a sleuth, providing Vincent with key insights to puzzling pieces of the thefts. I liked Jennifer S. Alderson's interweaving of the personal motives of art thieves, forgers, and criminal figures into the story. I liked the edginess and palpable tension created as the art thief responsible for the planning and execution of the robberies must keep his real motives hidden. A well-crafted mystery of stolen art with compelling characters.
