Out of school and finally married to her long-time sweetheart, Jesse Reed, Margaret has been trying to establish herself as a reporter at the West Prairie Journal with limited success. When her boss assigns her to cover the ongoing developments in Waunasha, Margaret finds herself at a crossroads; going to Waunasha means returning to her roots, to a family struggling to pick up the pieces of what it used to be, and confronting a very personal tragedy that nearly tore the close-knit community apart. The young woman understands that challenging decisions lie ahead, but only time will reveal whether she is ready to confront her demons in Mercy Town by Nancy Chadwick.

Nancy Chadwick creates an air of intrigue around the main character in Mercy Town. The whispers of Margaret's colleagues, along with strategically placed glimpses of her childhood, draw readers into her backstory. Chadwick poignantly illustrates the challenge of forgiveness through intense dialogues between Margaret and her parents. The author gradually builds suspense in the narrative, starting with casual banter among the townsfolk that hints at the underlying issue without stating it outright, immersing readers in the intrigue. A skillfully developed romantic subplot revolves around Margaret's marriage, featuring moments from Jesse and Margaret's encounters that define their complicated family life. Chadwick weaves in a subplot that addresses the sensitive topic of squatters' rights, a rarely discussed subject. The impressive blend of pacing, contemporary issues, and drama transforms Mercy Town into a thought-provoking novel that will appeal to fans of realistic fiction.
