Metaphysical Sherpa: Misunderstood Mystic by Nick Mirisola is an interesting deep dive into one man’s psyche, subconscious, and superconscious. The author is a self-confessed modern renaissance man whose mission on earth is to guide others to an understanding of the power inherent within them. This is the story of Nick Mirisola’s life up to now but it is more than that, as the author presents a wide selection of self-composed songs, poems, photos, and artwork about consciousness, enlightenment, our environment, and the universe in general. We follow Nick from birth through his childhood, education, and ultimately his engagement in many Eastern practices as he seeks enlightenment and to bring his unique collection of philosophies and ideas about life to the rest of the world. In this book, you will also have the opportunity to read about the author’s philosophy of science where he lays out important and insightful observations.

To fully appreciate Metaphysical Sherpa, readers definitely will require an open mind and a willingness to embrace and consider new ideas, and new philosophies of life, and be prepared to reconsider the paradigms we have all grown up with and been taught. I particularly appreciated that a large part of Nick Mirisola’s view of life, the subconscious, and the universe followed the precepts of New Age thought that I follow. This certainly enabled me to be more open to some of his more controversial statements and opinions. For me, the real highlight was the song lyrics and poems that took up a significant portion of the text. Perhaps it is the evocative poetic writing that allows me to become more open-minded to all aspects of the author’s philosophy. This section did flow beautifully and many of the poems were meaningful. I will readily admit that some aspects of the philosophy of science went right over my head but I have no doubt they will appeal to those readers with a more scientific bent. I found it fascinating that throughout the narrative the writer draws on inspiration and justification from almost every religion. The idea that religion as a human construct is merely our simple interpretation of a greater, cosmic higher power is one that resonated with me. This is a book for those readers who are seeking answers to life’s great conundrums. Does it provide the answers? I’m not sure but what it does do is give readers pause for thought and consideration. I can recommend this read if you are genuinely seeking an alternative paradigm to the world’s problems and the place of the individual within the universe.

Nick Mirisola tells his extraordinary life story in Metaphysical Sherpa. Born in 1981, Nick grew up in a family that moved around New England every year until he reached third grade, eventually settling in Merrimac, Massachusetts. From a young age, Nick showed an intense passion and understanding of Eastern holistic practices, including Zen Buddhist meditation, Islamic Sufism, Hindu Yogic philosophies, etc. He also delved into telepathic practices and had visions of his Eastern past lives. However, he continued to suffer from mental health issues, further exacerbated by Western pop psychiatrists often misdiagnosing him. Despite his run-ins with the law, Nick continues to pursue a life of peace, non-violence, and spiritual awakening, searching for his life's purpose in endeavors such as music, arts, philosophy, science, and religion.

Metaphysical Sherpa: Misunderstood Mystic is an illuminating memoir that sheds light on the life of a colorful individual who lives on his own terms and offers some poignant insights into the nature of reality, life, spirituality, and science. Apart from Nick Mirisola's narration, the book provides excerpts from his friends and family, who share their thoughts on the life of this remarkable man. Moreover, the book's second half offers stimulating artwork, humorous memes, and inspiring song lyrics. Mirisola gives an unflinching account of his life, leaving nothing out as he shares some unique perspectives he has acquired over the years of experience investigating Eastern philosophies and schools of thought, as well as drawing from biblical lore and the other Abrahamic scriptures. Overall, I found this to be a very enlightening memoir and highly recommend it to readers who welcome alternative viewpoints on religion, science, and philosophy.

In Metaphysical Sherpa, Nick Mirisola candidly recounts his life's journey, delineating familial influences, personal trials, and spiritual explorations. Raised by a compassionate, musical mother and a disciplined father, Mirisola experienced economic hardships and relocation-induced anxieties, finding respite in academia and athletics. His quest for meaning led him through substance experimentation, spiritual awakenings, and philosophical inquiries, culminating in a dedication to shamanism and higher consciousness. Despite mental health diagnoses and legal hurdles, Mirisola persisted in his pursuit of enlightenment, fostering deep connections with peers who admired his intellect and insight. Through original music, philosophical writings, and metaphysical contemplations, Mirisola shares all to inspire introspection and societal harmony, as well as providing perspectives on space, time, and existence.

Metaphysical Sherpa: Misunderstood Mystic by Nick Mirisola offers a multifaceted portrait of a life marked by resilience, intellectual curiosity, and a continued search for truth and understanding. It takes a great deal of courage to not only put your life story out into the universe but also to share one's art in its many forms, which more often than not are deeply personal. I most enjoyed the poetic songs, my two favorites being Electric Halo, which leans into the balance between human flaws and striving for goodness, and Mirage, which warns against deceptive appearances and the dangers of chasing illusions. Perhaps the most moving inclusion is a piece that was instead written about Mirisola by Crystalann Carter, who described him as intuitive and spiritually insightful, noting his mind-reading abilities, and how she incorporated natural remedies and spiritual practices into her routine with significant health improvements in her clients. Overall, this is a well-documented memoir that does well in showing us who its mystic author is.
