Mighty May Won’t Cry Today is a regular read for my household and soon became a favorite. This is because co-authoring team of Kendra and Claire-Voe Ocampo has written a beautiful story about expectations, setbacks, and overcoming. In the story, May is excited to start her first day of school. She dreamed of how her day will go and is expecting that she will love every minute of it. When the school day doesn’t quite turn out according to the perfectly imagined plan, May is distraught. An understanding teacher consoles May when she becomes disheartened. Once home, May’s Mommy and Mama comfort her and share their own stories of disappointment, first impressions, and second chances. Both parents encourage May and assure her that expressing feelings is normal and allows for healing.

Already an award-winning book, Mighty May Won’t Cry Today celebrates love. Whether it’s shared in preparation for the first day of school or on the many subsequent days when things can go awry, it’s a good story that includes advice for calming techniques, optimism, and emotional growth. The book features colorful watercolor illustrations by the talented Erica De Chavez. Each page invites viewers to look closely at the many visuals of May’s school day. The onomatopoeic lyrical text is fun to read as it moves across the pages. Kendra and Claire-Voe Ocampo’s book makes a great addition to reading lists and will certainly be reread in the future.
