"Moderate Drinking My Way" by Donna Cornett, who is the founder and director of Drink/Link Moderate Drinking Programs, is an informative book written for women. The author knows her facts as she is a problem drinker. She also knows statistics as on page 3 she writes that "sixty per cent of American women drink, six million of them abuse alcohol or are dependent on it and twenty-five per cent of alcoholics in this country are women." She does note that this is not a book for the woman with a serious drinking problem or those with physical or psychological conditions aggravated by alcohol use, but for those women who can and will bring their problem drinking under control. Cornett gives five steps that will help them do just that. Donna Cornett gets right into why women drink, and the triggers that have them running for that martini. She recommends that balance in life is the key to moderate drinking and offers practical suggestions such as not gulping down that glass of wine, avoiding heavy drinking occasions, and cultivating alcohol-free interests. And these recommendations are practical and easy to apply.
Donna Cornett has done the world a great help by writing "Moderate Drinking My Way". Many readers will be confused by the title, but once into this well-written, practical self-help book, the reader will be hooked. "Moderate Drinking My Way" is well-organized so that the reader can follow the suggested steps easily. And none of the steps is difficult to follow. There is an excellent bibliography at the end and a list of support groups and resources with telephone numbers and website addresses. This is a book that readers everywhere will want to read and share. It is also a "must purchase" for public and institutional libraries.
