A wonderful book that explores leadership psychologically, philosophically, and very practically is Zoe Routh’s Moments: Leadership When It Matters Most. At the core of the book is the importance of leadership authenticity and being yourself with concern for others. It is not a how-to read as much as it shows how to be a leader with empathy and emotional intelligence. This is not only for readers who have a position as a leader but is for informal leaders and future leaders as well. There are many actual examples from various leaders' personal and professional lives, including the author herself. The book focuses on three perspectives including Moments of Truth (personal issues), Defining Moments (ethical issues), and Heat of the Moment (interpersonal issues). The book takes each of these three perspectives and utilizes models to help the leader find ways to deal with them.
In the Moments of Truth section, the author uses a model where you determine the mindset/perception of a situation, follow with resolve/action, and determine the impact of taking the action. Important stories exemplify how leaders utilized the three steps. Each section similarly presents strategies for the leader to have the most impact. The author provides excellent examples of how to deal with ethical dilemmas in the second main section and the use of emotional Aikido rounds out the third section. Several touching moments made me reflect more on my own leadership, which seems to be a major aim of the author; for us to reflect on how we can become more effective and responsive leaders for our teams. Moments: Leadership When It Matters Most by Zoe Routh provides valuable ideas, thoughts, and actions for those desiring to become more effective leaders. It is a book worth multiple reads as I plan to do. I highly recommend this book to leaders.
