Mouse is Messy is a children's picture book written by Alyssa Thiessen, with illustrations by Sarah Neville. The story follows Mouse, who struggles with messiness, forgetfulness, and talking too much. Mouse's room is untidy when she heads to school, causing her to wear mismatched socks. Once at school, she discovers her desk is messy and she can't find her blue crayon to color the sky in her drawing. Instead, she decides to use pink, which earns her a compliment from her friend for the unique pink sky. Throughout the day, Mouse continues to face challenges, such as forgetting her lunch and not allowing her friend Bunny a chance to speak during their conversation. When she returns home, Mouse feels like a mess and believes she isn't a good friend. However, her mother comforts her, reminding her she is loved just the way she is—mess and all—and encourages her to stay positive and discover her strengths through challenges.
Mouse is Messy is a heartwarming story that explores themes of individuality, self-acceptance, and embracing unique qualities. It teaches children that everyone has different strengths and challenges, and that love and support from family and friends truly matter. Mouse is a relatable character who learns to be creative in tough situations, as illustrated by her clever use of a pink crayon instead of blue. The book emphasizes positive self-esteem, patience, and understanding, making it a valuable read for young children as they navigate their social and emotional growth. Alyssa Thiessen uses kind words and simple language that will resonate with children, while the colorful illustrations bring the story and characters to life. Overall, this is a wonderful read, and I recommend it to anyone who feels imperfect because sometimes recognizing that imperfection is part of being human can often help you discover your true strengths and potential.
