Murder at the Country Club by James Landsaw follows Jeff, a sharp-eyed waiter at an exclusive country club, who becomes embroiled in a deadly mystery. When a wealthy businessman, Victor Langston, is found dead in his study, the strange circumstances of his death and the reaction of Todd Billings, a powerful club member, pique Jeff's suspicions. What begins as a simple serving job turns into a dangerous investigation as Jeff uncovers a web of corruption, blackmail, and deceit, with connections to the club's president, Eli Westbrook. With the help of his colleagues and a savvy detective, Rachel Carter, Jeff takes on the dangerous task of exposing the truth behind Victor’s murder and the corruption festering within the club. The gripping plot leads to a high-stakes climax at the club's charity banquet, where secrets are revealed, and justice is served.
The quality of Murder at the Country Club is engaging, with a strong balance between suspense and character development. The pacing is just right, slowly building tension and keeping me hooked with each discovery Jeff makes. I appreciated how the book delved into themes like power, corruption, and social inequalities while maintaining a fast-moving, thrilling plot. The characters are well-developed, especially Jeff, whose growth from a quiet observer to an active force for justice was compelling. Eli Westbrook is a fantastic antagonist, complex and manipulative, while the supporting characters like Carlos and Linda add nice layers to the story. The writing is sharp and descriptive, bringing the setting of the country club to life and adding depth to the mystery. The book weaves a social commentary into the narrative, critiquing the elite world while keeping the plot gripping. The twists kept me on edge, and the ending left me eager to see what happens next—potentially laying the groundwork for a sequel. Murder at the Country Club is a satisfying and thought-provoking read, full of tension and intrigue.
