Murder by Misrule: A Francis Bacon Mystery by Anna Castle is a murder mystery, as the title suggests, set in a historical background. Francis Bacon has assigned his protégé Thomas Clarady to do all the legwork for investigating the murder of Tobias Smythson, a fellow barrister at Gray's Inn. This is challenging for Clarady who wants climb the social ladder and he leaves no stone unturned to reach his goal. Bacon's uncle suspects the Catholic conspirators of committing the crime, but slowly other factors come to the fore. The investigation ranges from Whitehall to the streets of London. While rival barristers fight it out in court, many high placed courtiers are implicated in the murder mystery. And everyone involved with the case has a private agenda.
The book is a compelling read and will keep readers glued to it with its suspense, intrigue and fast pace. The twists and the turns in the plot will take you by surprise. The characters are great and well portrayed and the author does a remarkable job in building up the suspense. The historical angle and the murder have been woven together masterfully and with a lot of fluidity. The humor and funny scenes tone down the serious voice of the book in many places. The lighter moments in the story are between Sir Francis Bacon and Clarady. The story reveals another side of Sir Francis Bacon and this is a tastefully done historical fiction which I would recommend to all readers.
