I was drawn immediately to My Daddy Sleeps Naked and Other Teacher Tales by Suzanne Roper Lisenby. This catchy title reminded me of the fun tall tales shared with me when I was an elementary teacher. The book is an anthology filled with stories shared by various children and adults that the author has encountered in her career. It is a reminder of how creative children are. Each story is filled with humor and anecdotes from the author’s various experiences of being the trusted person her students, family, and friends chose to share their stories with. The reader will enjoy learning about the day-to-day activities of being an educator in a school and understanding the fun that went into some of the dialogue between educator and student, as well as reading about stories shared by others. The author’s friends and family took the time to really listen to what a child had to say at a particular moment, recognizing a great tale that needed to be shared.
Suzanne Roper Lisenby’s choice to start My Daddy Sleeps Naked and Other Teacher Tales with scripture attribution is a great reminder of the gifts that children bring to everyday life. Her book emphasizes how everyone has a story to tell, and children do indeed tell the best ones! They are unedited, honest, and straight from the heart. This compilation of tales celebrates the love, fun, and learning that occur in schools and in families; another reminder of how good educators allow children’s voices to be heard and respected. The book includes a ‘From the Author’s Desk’ at the beginning of each section, painting the scene of what is to come for readers. The author adds personal reflective comments at the end of some stories. This is a great way for readers to pause, digest, identify with, and find the humor in the anecdote that they have just read. The stories are simple and short, and I enjoyed reading more than one at a time. Overall, a fun read that made me giggle and reminded me of how much fun I had teaching.
