Gabe Oppenheim’s New York City Love Triangle, 1931: A Tale of Three Families explores a scandalous affair set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Manhattan. The narrative follows three prominent families—the Thomashefskys, the Birdseyes, and the Bernsteins—whose lives become entwined in a love triangle and a tragic series of events. The story begins with a shocking crime that shakes their world, leading to an intense police investigation that uncovers hidden relationships and rivalries within these storied families. Throughout the book, photographs from the era are interspersed, providing a visual (and sometimes haunting) context that enriches the narrative. These images range from street scenes of the bustling Lower East Side to intimate family portraits, which help to anchor the story’s dramatic events in a tangible reality. The inclusion of these photographs serves as a critical narrative tool that bridges the gap between past and present.

New York City Love Triangle, 1931 would be the perfect crime novel if it weren’t a true story. It’s mind-blowing to think of this happening, but it’s all meticulously documented. Gabe Oppenheim’s research is impressive, and his writing style captures the essence of the era with a keen eye for detail. The book’s structure, which carefully layers multiple perspectives, allows for a deep examination of its characters’ emotional and psychological depths. The result is a riveting read that tells a powerful story and offers insight into the human condition. This book is a masterful blend of history and drama, beautifully illustrated with period photographs. It is a must-read for anyone interested in New York history and the complex dynamics of human relationships. Oppenheim is the next Truman Capote, and this is a true crime story you won’t want to miss.
