Next Play by Owen Pace is a self-help book featuring 25 well-known sportspeople whose life stories and lessons learned can be applied by others to their daily lives. It’s split into three sections: section one is about courage, section two is about resilience, and the final one, titled “Team and Purpose,” is about leadership and teamwork. The final section has six more challenges for the reader to complete to set themselves up for success. Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Lionel Messi, Roger Federer, Wayne Gretzky, and Michael Jordan are just a snapshot of the 25 legends of sports who appear between these pages. Every one of them has a story designed to inspire and educate. Each chapter talks about the sportsperson and what hardship they’ve had to overcome, and how they did it. There’s a direct quote from each plus a fast fact about them, their career, and their highlights that you may or may not already know. At the end of the chapter, there are lessons for the reader and challenge questions to answer before moving on.
Next Play isn’t just a guide on how to get better at whatever sport you’re currently playing; it is that, but more. I appreciate the way Owen Pace has set out this book. Every sportsperson’s chapter is inspiring. You can read one, then go away and reflect on it, or binge-read all of them; it’s designed for every reader to choose how they want to absorb the information. You can apply these principles to every aspect of your life, from your education to your job to your relationships. As such, I believe this book should be read by everyone. There’s so much positivity to gain from it. It’s ideal for everyone from high school and college students to future sports stars to corporate CEOs.
