Night and Day by Katie Louise Miller is a memoir chronicling the author's journey, centered around her exploration of gender identity. Miller describes a childhood, shaped by her father's departure, her mother's struggles, and her battles with asthma. A pivotal moment at a wedding triggers her hidden desire for cross-dressing, which she privately pursues for years. Miller marries and becomes a father but keeps her cross-dressing a secret. Finally, after watching a documentary, she reveals her feelings to her wife. Supported, Miller embraces her identity and undergoes hormone therapy. The marriage ends and Miller begins to navigate public spaces and the realities of everyday life as a transgender woman, documenting her internal challenges and medical processes. Throughout, Miller underscores her commitment to authenticity and the impact of societal norms and personal relationships on her journey, all with hope and determination.

Katie Louise Miller provides a deeply personal perspective on her emotional journey as she navigated her gender transition, and the discussion of her thoughts, fears, and hopes is conveyed with complete honesty that allowed me as a reader to connect with her experiences. Miller effectively had to start her life over, which is a terrifying prospect under circumstances where our physical identity remains the same. In Miller's case, she flings the window open on the challenges and triumphs of building and rebuilding connections from scratch, including with family members and friends, and later with potential partners. I've read transition stories before but Night and Day was the first time an author allowed us so intimately into the space of hormone replacement and therapy sessions that are critical to taking the beauty Miller has inside and watching it evolve physically. The writing style is conversational and the inclusion of photographs makes the narrative feel like a chat with a friend. I can see this being an inspirational tale for those who are in gender-affirming limbo, and also for readers who seek to find the level of acceptance with others that Miller has in herself. Very highly recommended.
