Noble Satyr is a work of fiction in the historical romance and interpersonal drama subgenres and forms the opening book of the Roxton Foundation Series. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience and was penned by seasoned author Lucinda Brant, with narration for this audiobook format provided by narrator Mary Jane Wells. In this utterly charming Georgian tale set in 1740, we find ourselves embroiled in the life of the troubled Antonia, who must flee Versailles as a vicious predator there seeks to undo her. But Antonia may be out of the frying pan and into the fire when her savior turns out to be the aristocratic Duke of Roxton, a man with a sinister and licentious reputation. Can this unlikely pairing teach one another anything of value, or will one ultimately lead to the other’s ruin?

In terms of the story itself, author Lucinda Brant ensures that her readers get absolutely everything that they could wish from a romance in this historical novel. To begin with, there’s the recreation of the court of Versailles and various other locales across France and England, which are gorgeously detailed with no teacup left unturned. This makes for strong cinematic visuals that feel like a classic movie playing out in one’s mind with the splendor of costumes, fashion, and society coming to life. Then, the character dynamic shows off the range of different people with their scandals and secrets, but always keeping that polite air of mystery and the aristocratic decorum that makes them so very enticing. Noble Satyr offers a gorgeously penned romance and a tapestry of relationships for drama fans to absolutely devour. I know I did.

Regarding the audiobook presentation, I was totally swept away by the superb vocal talents of narrator Mary Jane Wells. An ideal complement to the tone of the story, Wells is crisp and clear in capturing every detail of the era, suitably dark and saturnine as Roxton, then a total transformation into Antonia with a delicate French twist to the accent. The story gathers pace, excitement, and emotion all the more quickly thanks to her presentation and performance skills, and I can’t imagine having discovered this story any other way than hearing it from her. Overall, I would highly recommend Noble Satyr for all historical romance fans as an ideal introduction to the world and works of Lucinda Brant.
