Where the Deer and the Antelope Play by Rick Donahoe follows the adventures of a man suffering from a terminal illness. With the doctor's diagnosis foretelling an uncertain future, Stewart Waldon arrives in the scenic forests of the Intermountain West, resigning himself to his fate. He spends almost a year camping inside the caves of the mountains until he comes across the old ranch owner, Ned Rattigan. Stewart starts helping Ned run the ranch and meets Annie, a fiercely independent woman who steals his heart the moment he first lays eyes on her. Ned's son, Butch, wants to sell off all the timber on their land for lots of money. However, Stewart will risk everything to protect the forests he has come to love so much.
Where the Deer and the Antelope Play is a heartwarming slice-of-life tale with a poignant message about environmental and wildlife conservation. This is a character-driven drama that highlights the importance of hope and resilience when the future seems bleak. Apart from the inspiring message, the main protagonist's story arc was one of the highlights of the book for me. Stewart transforms from a hopeless man with nothing to lose to someone who starts caring about something more than himself. The secondary characters are also salt-of-the-earth people who are easy to like. I loved the dynamic between Stewart, Ned, and Annie. Rick Donahoe paces the plot well, and it makes for a very enjoyable read. Personally, I found the ending satisfying, and I think other readers will feel the same.
