Global Game Changers: 50 Stories of Impact and Innovation by Yana Bijoor presents accounts of people who convert turning points into structured work that addresses social and environmental problems. Bijoor spans sectors and regions in direct, first-person interviews. Among them is social entrepreneur Aline Sara as she builds NaTakallam to link displaced tutors with language learners through online sessions that generate income and preserve cultural knowledge. Diplomat Roshni Nirody Ostergaard describes assignments that support policy on trade and security as well as anti-human trafficking through collaborative teams. Engineer Ida Padikuor Na-Tei develops CTN Technologies from a student club into training that introduces African youth to robotics and coding. Humanitarian leader Iftikhar Ahmad Shaheen recounts work in conflict-affected areas that centers on local priorities and long-term participation.
Global Game Changers by Yana Bijoor is a fantastic compilation of people from all over the world, and I went in thinking I would probably know most on the list. I am embarrassed to admit that I hardly knew any! Thankfully, Bijoor makes getting to know them easy with a clean and concise format. The inclusions are diverse, making it hard to pick a favorite, but the standout to me is Deirdre Bird. I love how Bird turned an everyday inconvenience, namely, a broken polyester umbrella, into a company that converts discarded ocean plastic into durable umbrellas. As someone who truly values environmental action, she was amazing to me. The other standout is Kherann Yao, who is also an environmental warrior in Côte d’Ivoire, who turned plastic pollution into Green Ivory, which advances environmental education and youth involvement. Overall, this is a great collection. Very highly recommended.
