Nonno the Wine Maker is a novella written by Phil Scrima. After Antonio invites Natalia to sample some of his grandfather’s wine in Rutherford, the two make their way to test some exquisite varieties that Nonno has made. When they arrive at Nonno’s Vineyard, Natalia is amazed to see Antonio’s grandfather working hard in the garden, despite the fact that he is over one hundred years old. Walking into Nonno’s home is like taking a step back into the 1940s, and with Nonno being completely self-sufficient on his farm, he enjoys the peace and simplicity of it all. In looking through his memoirs, Natalia learned that Nonno had moved to America during the time of the Great Depression and found work at a winery before sending for his pregnant wife to join him. The journey to America by boat was difficult and the process was long, but Nonno and his wife wanted a better future for their children. When Antonio tells his grandfather of his intentions with Natalia, Nonno makes Antonio an offer that he cannot refuse.

Phil Scrima’s tale of an Italian immigrant who moves to America for a brighter future, building his own home and becoming fully self-sufficient is one of inspiration which was truly an eye-opener for me. Learning of the poor conditions that Europeans were forced to endure on the journey alone brought a tear to my eye, but seeing Nonno’s strength and energy even at such a ripe old age shows true strength, courage and determination to fit into their new surroundings. The close bond between Nonno and his grandson is evident throughout the tale, and I could not help but smile at the old man’s charm and manners. Nonno the Wine Maker is an emotional tale which brings hard truths about our history to life, showing that even in the face of adversity people can make their dreams come true. I very much enjoyed reading Nonno the Wine Maker and recommend it to those who enjoy a taste of historical reality with a sampling of the finest chardonnay.
