Once Upon a Paper Plane... is a picture book by Sara Moffatt Ph.D. with illustrations by Christina Tarsitano. Told in rhyme, the narrative takes the young reader on journeys of imagination where paper can become a real plane, cardboard boxes a train, buttons the wheels of a bus, shoes and shoestrings a racing car, and scraps of paper a bike. The characters represent an ethnically diverse group of children including one in a wheelchair and one who is blind. The children are shown helping each other in friendly settings as well as concentrating on their tasks. The full-color illustrations capture the concept of ordinary objects becoming something else through imaginative play, encouraging readers to wonder what other objects around them might become.
In Once Upon a Paper Plane..., Dr. Sara Moffatt gives us a playful adventure into childhood imagination. This is a book that any child would enjoy reading or which parents and teachers would have fun sharing with their child or young student. Not only does it stimulate children to see objects around them in a different light, but it reinforces the value of diversity and appreciating the contributions and abilities of those who are different from us whether in ethnicity or physical needs. These children are having fun together as they imagine a world in which even the sky isn’t the limit, and scraps of paper, bits of string, and ordinary cardboard boxes can take them to places they have never been. A perfect gift for giving and sharing.
