Diwali is known as the festival of lights, fireworks, and family gatherings. But do you know why people celebrate Diwali? Find out in this wholesome picture book by Aditi Wardhan Singh. Our Diwali follows a small family preparing for Badi Diwali, which is three days away. Taran, a happy-go-lucky child, asks his mom why they're preparing for Diwali so soon. His mom answers that all this preparation is for Lord Ganesh, the goddess Laxmi, and their guests. Taran learns that every day of Diwali has a different meaning. For people in North India, Diwali signifies the return of Lord Ram from war. In South India, Diwali is celebrated because Lord Krishna and Satyabhama defeated Narakasur. Meanwhile, the Buddhists in Nepal and the Sikhs from Punjab have their own reasons to celebrate Diwali.

Our Diwali is a heartwarming picture book that shows the significance of a festival from India and how it brings different people together. Author Aditi Wardhan Singh provides an illuminating backstory on the origins of Diwali and sheds light on how people from various cultures and ethnicities celebrate the same festival for different reasons. Singh does a wonderful job of incorporating the mythology of Raamaayan into the story in a way that children can appreciate and enjoy. The characters are likable, and young readers will find it easy to relate to Taran, Sejal, and Madhav. The illustrations by Suja Dinesh are colorful and enhance Singh's story. Written in both Hindi and English, the book is suitable for Hindi and English speakers alike. I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to children below the age of seven.
