Pagan Apocalypse by John Triptych is a novella from the Wrath of the Old Gods series. Steve is a thirteen-year-old boy who is suddenly evacuated by the military from his home with his family, leaving behind all of his favorite games and gadgets ... and his sister, Amy, who’d snuck out of the house the night before. One phone call to Steve from his best friend and skate buddy, Ray, confirms that they are being attacked by Fomorians – demons which had inhabited Ireland before they were defeated by the Celtic gods. Steve quickly recalls a conversation at Ray’s house, just a few days prior, discussing the strange things which had been happening lately in the news, along with predictions by exiled wizard, Amicus Tarr, foretelling that a demon army would attack England within the next few days, bringing about the end of the world. When Steve sees the corpses on the street outside his window, he runs to find Ray and Amy. Unable to find any traces of life, Steve runs to a nearby park, hoping to find Ray there. Instead, he finds Amy and her boyfriend, Mark, and they are again forced to run for their lives. Steve decides to seek out the wizard who had predicted the attack, with Amy and Mark in tow, in the hopes of finding a way to stop the monsters once and for all.
Possibly one of the most unique tales I have ever read, Pagan Apocalypse is a very entertaining read with realistic dialogue between teenagers, causing me to literally laugh out loud. The book itself is set out beautifully and is very reader-friendly. Each of the human characters in the book is very easy to identify with. With the exception of the non-capitalization of ‘Pagan’ throughout the book, I found only sheer delight in reading such an entertaining story which combined horror, suspense, action, drama and humor into a perfect novella-sized package. I look forward to reading more from John Triptych, including the remainder of the Wrath of the Old Gods series which is very well written.
