Peace, Love & Haight by Max Talley is a crime thriller that takes readers back to 1969’s San Francisco. The story follows a man named Freddie Dorn who runs an art gallery, United Hallucinations, just trying to keep it afloat as he watches the neighborhood change from its idealistic peace and love façade to a dangerous area. Dorn’s world is turned upside down after a meeting on the Golden Gate Bridge with a dealer named Rat-Man turns deadly. This sets off a chain of events, leaving Dorn tangled up with the police on one side and the criminal underworld on the other. Readers follow Dorn on different missions, from infiltrating a bank robbery to a commune run by Baba Gagi, where a missing woman is trapped, and back to his personal world involving his ex-girlfriend Ali and her unstable ex-husband, forcing Dorn to play protector.

Max Talley had written a gritty and immersive crime thriller. It was well-paced, and I could feel the danger escalating throughout the narrative. The characters were interesting and moved the plot forward. Dorn went from guarded and observant to action-driven, although forced into a series of events that affected his world. Detective Rodriguez added pressure and tension, but also bent the rules to get results. Ali was vulnerable and balanced the harsh, brutal scenes with her emotional moments with Dorn. I loved feeling like I was right there in the dangerous places where Dorn’s missions took him. I also liked the way Talley shed light on a utopian era, exposing the dangers. Readers who enjoyed Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon would most appreciate Peace, Love & Haight.
