Persnickety Peacock Pierre by Erika M Szabo reminds us that beauty is one thing, but bragging about it, being snotty and stuck up, or even downright mean, that’s quite another. Pierre the peacock has a beautiful tail and everyone admires him when his tail is fully open. Even the animals at the farm where he lives are fascinated by his beauty. For a while, they even praise him. But when asked to join in the barnyard fun, Pierre looks down on the others and is rude. Beauty is beauty, but it’s quite boring when you think about it. As Tobi, the guard dog said, quite bluntly: “Nobody likes you because you’re a stuck-up bird and you look down on all of us. Beauty can be admired, but nobody will like you if you’re selfish and don’t care for anyone but yourself.” Pierre had a lot to learn and it took an almost deadly confrontation with the fox to teach him what’s important in life.
Erika M Szabo’s picture book, Persnickety Peacock Pierre, is a sweet story about what is beautiful in life. The language is simple so young readers can follow along and the bright, boldly colorful illustrations certainly add zest to the story and help the plot develop. Each new page, picture, and text, is introduced with the main character featured on that page, giving the story the added dimension of almost being an early chapter book. The themes of outer beauty and arrogance are difficult lessons to teach, but the author has chosen her characters well and created a powerful plot that will help young readers learn the important message of this story. The story itself is beautiful and will be cherished for generations.
