Queen of the Fairies by Lois Wickstrom is a charming and fun story that’s perfect for young readers. It’s about a writer who is trying to create a tale about the Queen of the Fairies. As she writes, she imagines the Queen using her magical powers to boss around all the other fairies. The writer has some thoughts about fairies too—some are good, and some are a bit mischievous. Worried that the bad fairies might take her story if she doesn’t include them, the writer comes up with a clever plan. She brings the Queen some delicious, sweet fruit to win her over and get back her story. What happens next is sure to surprise you.

I enjoyed the playful tone and the imaginative idea behind Queen of the Fairies. It’s so much fun to see a writer interacting with their own characters, especially when those characters are lively fairies. The narrator’s mix of worry and determination adds a relatable touch that children will love. Lois Wickstrom's beautiful story highlights themes of believing in oneself and storytelling's magic, all while keeping things light and entertaining. The humorous moments, like the idea of giving the Queen some tasty fruit, add a lighthearted vibe to the plot. The characters are vibrant, and young readers will be excited to see how the Queen’s wisdom and the bad fairies’ antics play out. With the beautiful illustrations by Ada Konewki, the story came to life. Plus, the clever twist of a story within a story is just delightful—it makes the story even more special.
