Radical Ray by Bobbi Chegwyn follows Ray Roxby, who learns and practices Radical Love from his grandmother, Leila, and applies it through the R.A.D. Framework of Reach, Act, Discover. Ray notices classmates, neighbors, and community members who feel isolated or need help, like Jack, Tarek, Sam, Nicholas, and Lizzie, and deliberately supports their inclusion and confidence. He engages them in soccer, creative projects, gardening, and shared responsibilities, creating opportunities for participation and social connection. Ray initiates a visible symbol for students to invite others to join, and coordinates efforts like the school garden to reinforce cooperation. Through his actions, peers begin modeling kindness themselves, and the initiative gains wider recognition, including national media coverage, showing how structured and spontaneous small acts of care can produce lasting, positive social impact.
Radical Ray by Bobbi Chegwyn is an extraordinary celebration of the power of everyday kindness and thoughtful action. Ray is such a likable character, and the concept of Radical Love and the message could not possibly be more timely. Better still, as my youngest readers are both minorities in race and religion, Chegwyn's storytelling leans into inclusiveness and considerate actions in bringing people together and nurturing connections, which is really touching. Everything is depicted with care and in ways that feel authentic and approachable, demonstrating that anyone can make a positive difference. Every chapter reinforces the importance of noticing, supporting, and celebrating one another, leaving readers uplifted and motivated. Radical Ray is a truly inspiring and joyful read that demonstrates how small acts can transform communities. Very highly recommended.
