Radical Ray: The Too Much Moment by Bobbi Chegwyn is a children's adventure story. Ray Roxby attends elementary classes at Booralee Public School. All Ray wants is to make people laugh, and he is quite good at it, too. He is determined to do a comedy skit at the school's "The Great Talent Takeover" show. But everything falls apart when the teacher, Mr. Pete Nelson, calls out Ray with two words. Soon, Ray's entire worldview turns upside down, and he begins to doubt himself. Addison Monroe is the new girl in Ray's class. Addison and her family have just moved from the other side of the world, from Ohio, United States, to Australia. With Grandma Leila's support, Ray learns about his mind's GPS and gets his old mojo back. Now, he must help Addison come out of her shell.

Self-doubt and uncertainty can bring anyone down. Here, Ray and Addison are two prime examples of that. Radical Ray covers some important topics related to social and emotional learning. Bobbi Chegwyn does a masterful job of incorporating these themes into the story in a subtle and nuanced way for young readers. The book is primarily targeted toward elementary school readers. But older readers will also enjoy the narrative. I certainly did. I liked how the two main characters, Ray and Addison, have opposite personalities and react to their surroundings in very different ways. However, both are sensitive kids who bond over their shared need to feel a sense of belonging. Toward the end of the book, young readers will find an interactive section titled "Think, Share, and Explore," which will help them understand the themes even better. I recommend Radical Ray to young readers.
