Some contests are about winning; others reveal who people really are. In On the Trail of the Mysterious Burglar: The Adventures of Professor Green by Kateryna Rakova, the students and professors at Spooner Academy are busy preparing for the annual Magic Trees competition. It’s an event surrounded by intrigue and old legends. Sue Jefferson is among the academy's best. But she’s finding it difficult to keep up with her gifted new classmate, Tony. Especially since she also has personal responsibilities. Meanwhile, a series of strange thefts from the chemistry lab draws Professor Green and the academy's director into an investigation. The mystery tests friendships and rivalries as the students search for the truth. Will Sue find a way to balance her responsibilities and school? And who is really behind the theft at Spooner Academy?
On the Trail of the Mysterious Burglar by Kateryna Rakova was an interesting book. I immediately had questions about the mysterious burglar after reading the title. I definitely had fun trying to solve the whodunit right along with the characters. Sue stood out to me. At first, she seemed to have everything under control. Her cracks started to show. But they made her human and relatable. The Magic Trees competition and the academy's legends added a magical element that piqued my curiosity. The writing was clear and easy to read. I could easily picture this novel becoming a longer series with more adventures at Spooner Academy. Young adult readers looking for school-based mysteries, academic rivalries, and stories with a touch of fantasy will want to pick this one up.
