“If people would stop murdering other people in molten glass, it would be easier.” Yes, it would be easier, but perhaps these murders are just one issue in Resurrection of the Ruby Skull (Fox Argall Mysteries book four), a novel by Collings MacCrae. The story begins fittingly enough when Ellis ‘Fox’ Argall, a brilliant detective at the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Violent Crimes Division, sets out to investigate what could be a murder at the nearby Ianella Flame Art Glass Company. Unfortunately for the ASD Level 1 afflicted Fox, a single murder turns into something far more sinister and only part of an underlying mystery. As Fox and his cohorts investigate the crime, and the identity of the victim becomes just as important as the identity of the killer, the body count rises, claiming the initial suspects as additional victims.
Original, well-researched, and complex, Resurrection of the Ruby Skull is a fine example of imaginative crime fiction. The plot focuses on a neurodivergent and eccentric Poirot-type detective who quickly realizes that one mystery only leads to another as vicious secrets bind the crimes together. Throughout the narrative, themes of depravity are prominent. Still, subtler themes of both the villains and heroes attempting to adjust to a life that plays by different rules are also present. The strength of the novel lies in its characters, and these carefully crafted individuals are anything but stereotypical villains or heroes. Collings MacCrae does some outstanding work here. Witty banter drives the pace, but the dialogue and prose are both slightly peculiar. While this enhances the novel's uniqueness, it also affects the pace at times, which ranges from moderate to fast. For crime and mystery enthusiasts seeking something new and fresh, this novel delivers.
