Riding with a Cougar by Miranda Lynn is the captivating first installment in the Fox Ridge Riders MC series. For readers who enjoy tales of shapeshifters with intense conflict, this will be a gorgeous treat. Karma has risen to the top as the President of the Fox Ridge Riders MC after betrayal by her fated mate. As a powerful cougar, she has fought hard to build the life she deserves, but now her father is determined to destroy everything she has worked for. She is not ready to let Rhyno Russo win, even if he heads the South American MC, The Motley Beasts. To protect herself and her club, she must create an alliance with the one person she has vowed never to have anything to do with — Chaos, the president of the rival Wolves' Den MC. As Karma and Chaos navigate their new connection, they must deal with not only external threats but also two powerful drugs — Synth and Dust — and betrayal. Is their love strong enough to pull them through the ensuing chaos?
Miranda Lynn plunged me into a world I was delighted to navigate. I enjoyed how she writes about shapeshifters, creating a world where power struggles punctuate the daily lives of the characters. These characters are fully drawn, and while they are depicted as superhumans, they have flaws that make them relatable. Riding with a Cougar is well-plotted, and I loved how the author uses the multifaceted conflict to drive the narrative forward. Themes of romance, independence, and betrayal are expertly developed. While the characters are rock-solid and the conflict is strong enough, it was the narrative voice that captivated me the most. The first-person perspective gives the story an intimate touch, allowing a close connection between the characters and the reader. You’ll enjoy the crisp writing, the descriptive prose, and the well-crafted, focused, and tense scenes of this engaging paranormal romance. This is my kind of novel, and I enjoyed following the cougar.
