Right Across the Bay by Quinn Avery is a psychological thriller set in Lake Shetek, Minnesota. Britta Baxter, a fitness influencer, has moved to her grandmother’s lakeside property for a fresh start in life. When her childhood friend and cousin Maxine visits Britta, she comes face to face with her first love, Noah, who now lives in a house across the lake from Britta. As Noah and Maxine revisit old memories and create new ones, a shadow hovers over their reunion. When Britta’s body is found floating in the bay Detective Josephine Kelly is called in by the local sheriff to help unravel the murder mystery. During her investigation, she realizes that darker undercurrents and more than one suspect with a motive might be at play. Will the clues she finds help her to connect the dots between the past and present and find the truth?

Quinn Avery has created an emotionally charged and immersive plot in Right Across the Bay. The vivid descriptions made me feel like a witness to the scene as I was pulled into the story, watching the scene through Maxine’s eyes when Britta’s body was found in the lake. In the first chapter, the narrative introduces us to key characters and sets the stage for the mystery, hinting at secrets that will be uncovered as the plot progresses. Using a non-linear narrative, the story has a measured pace with some twists I never saw coming till the last chapter. The story is told from multiple perspectives, and each perspective, be it that of Maxine, Noah, or Detective Kelly, digs deeply into the thoughts and emotions of the characters, making them relatable and sympathetic. The primary focus is on finding the culprit, but the narrative also reflects on the effects of childhood trauma and love and acceptance. For fans of psychological thrillers and suspenseful plots.
