Rusty the Ringtail by Thomas Lopez is a fun kids’ story with a supernatural aspect. Cleopatra Hills in Jerome, Arizona, is a maze of abandoned mines, and Rusty the Ringtail has decided he’ll be the night watchman at the Little Daisy Mine. One night, he comes face-to-face with a ghost, Jimmy the Burro, who used to haul ore carts through the mine. He’s lonely, so he and Rusty team up and set off on an adventure, exploring the canyons and deserts of Arizona. Returning from an adventure one night, they come across a little girl who needs help. Can the two friends work together to help her?

Rusty the Ringtail by Thomas Lopez is a lovely illustrated tale about a ghost and a ringtail, but it’s also a history lesson. Historical facts are woven into this story, with the illustrations presenting how the town would have looked during the era. The ghost may be teaching Rusty about the history of the land, but he’s also teaching readers, and at the end of the book is a little extra history and a challenge to visit the Montezuma Castle National Monument in Jerome to learn more. There are also some fascinating facts about ringtails and burros, and some fun things to do when you visit Jerome. I can think of no better way for young readers to learn than to read this book and then visit the place where the action is set. It’s well-written and easy to read, and I highly recommend it to all readers.
