Jean Davis brings us beautiful fantasy fiction in Sahmara. With the moon as her only source of light, Sahmara runs for freedom from her Atherian captors. Taken from her home four months ago and having endured the rough, dirty hands of a different soldier each night, Sahmara runs. Hungry and hurt, she offers up a prayer to the gods. All she wants to do is go home. All she wants is to see her Ma’hasi again. Having lived a life of quiet luxury, she has no idea how to survive in the enemy’s territory. When an old woman offers her help, giving her necessary items to assist in her travels, Sahmara begins to suspect the gods did indeed answer her prayers. But what is their price?
Author Jean Davis has a unique talent that draws the reader into this story in an instant. You are plunged into an unfamiliar world with a strong female character. Yet you are enveloped in a warm embrace due to the third-person narrative, focusing mainly on the protagonist’s thoughts and emotions. All of your senses are heightened and stimulated throughout the narrative. Character development for several of the characters is evident, and the story progresses at a wonderful pace. Fight scenes are choreographed exquisitely and every twist and turn, block, and stab is intensely experienced. Due to the violent and sexual situations in this book, it isn’t recommended for a younger audience. However, these sexual situations are done with class, and nothing is overly graphic or disturbing. Pleasantly surprised by Sahmara, I am looking out for other titles by this author.
