Sal, Captain of the Baby Guards, by Jennifer Reinoehl, is a delightful romp into a toddler’s imagination. Sal comes from a long and distinguished line of baby guards that have been given the important task of protecting their family from the dangers of dragons. Sal’s mission is to be on the lookout for an elusive dragon and slay it should it ever appear. Sal has never seen a dragon before, but he knows that a baby guard must be forever vigilant, and his constant pursuit just may bring him before the famed creature. Journey with Sal throughout his household as he protects his family from dragons. With a bit of courage and more than a little imagination, Sal may get his chance to be a hero.
Sal, Captain of the Baby Guards is a fun tale that celebrates the wonders of a child’s imagination. The story is cute and the surprising dragon fight within will give parents and caregivers of children a good chuckle. Toddlers love an adventure, and young readers will find that they have a lot in common with Sal. I suspect that many will want to hunt for their own magical creatures after reading this tale. The illustrations within are also quite fun. As an added bonus, there are hidden dragons creeping upon each page. While they aren’t too difficult to find, younger readers will surely have fun searching the page for them. Reinoehl’s story is fun, and I think adults will enjoy it just a much as the children, possibly more because of the humorous twist that it takes. I would recommend this for any child’s collection, and I hope to read more from Jennifer Reinoehl.
