Seang/Hungering is an ode to Irish people and their struggles. In this illuminating collection of poems, Anne Casey depicts the trials and tribulations of Irish famine immigrants in Ireland and Australia. "Scarcity Commission" is a poignant poem that illustrates the devastating impact of the Great Irish Famine. "Trade Balance" recounts the treatment of the Irish under English rule during the potato famine. "Live Exports to Sydney" paints a vivid picture of the state of the Irish people emigrating to Australia on long voyages under brutal conditions. "Bedlam in the Barracks" tells the tale of rebellious girls kept under strict supervision in reform schools in Australia, most of them daughters of Irish famine immigrants. A woman faces the terrible consequences of having a baby out of wedlock in "Baby in the Bag."
Seang/Hungering is a collection about surviving adversity, colonialism, and resistance. Through her poetry, Anne Casey crafts a thought-provoking narrative that underlines the significance of human resilience in the face of adversity. Each of these poems tells stories of the subjugation of a people under colonialism. Some of them reflect the horrors of the Irish famine, while others recall the plight of some of the very first immigrants to Australia from Ireland. Casey's poems feel very intimate, but the themes are universal, especially for readers interested in the history of the colonial era. Some of these issues are even relevant today, as racism, bigotry, and other kinds of discrimination still exist in society in one form or another. All in all, this is a beautiful collection that I highly recommend to any poetry aficionado.
