Seeing by Moonlight is a literary historical thriller written by M.F. Thomas and Nicholas Thurkettle. When we first meet Alex Pyke, he's congratulating himself over shifting a used Civic that had languished in the used car lot where he works as a salesman. He likes to think of himself as up-and-coming with a gift for making a sale and getting the girls. Alex has also managed to buy a home in an exclusive neighborhood with a golf course. On the day after that sale, he's playing a round with Cal, a wealthy neighbor who lies about his handicap and is boasting about his plan to purchase two rare BMWs from a collector in Munich. Alex seizes upon what seems to be an opportunity to get into the imported market and offers to go to Germany and handle the transaction. Alex's life changes drastically as a result of that offer.
M.F. Thomas and Nicholas Thurkettle's literary thriller, Seeing by Moonlight, is one of those books that are just about impossible to put down. When I wasn't reading it, I found myself thinking about the story and looking forward to my next reading session. This writing team is extraordinarily gifted. Their style is smooth and lyrical, and their characters are finely drawn and quickly come alive in the reader's mind. There are heroes and villains in Seeing by Moonlight, but the lines between the two are rather finely drawn and can seem to blur. There's Filibert Lohr who opens Alex's mind to many possibilities, his cool and mesmerizing niece, Elise, and Andreas, an assassin for whom murder is both a passion and an art, to name just a few. The action takes place on two stages: Germany in the late 1940s and at the end of the twentieth century, and the transitions between the two are accomplished with unerring skill and precision. I loved reading this book! Seeing by Moonlight has everything I look for in a work of fiction and a lot more. M.F. Thomas and Nicholas Thurkettle have written a marvelous book indeed, and it's very highly recommended.
