Author Biography

BJ Cyprian has harbored a passion for writing from a young age. It took her a while to get around to writing her first book because frankly, she wasn’t sure she had anything to say that others wanted to hear. After years of successfully posting Facebook posts regaling her friends with stories about her life, she thought maybe she did have a unique voice.

After the 2016 election, BJ felt just as agitated as over 50% of the population and felt like she might actually have a whole story in her mind. Tired of her underestimating herself, her wife Shauna threatened to divorce her if she didn’t just sit down and write the damn book. Well, okay, perhaps it wasn’t that serious, but Shauna did tell her she needed to do what was in her heart. (Obviously, BJ favors sarcastic hyperbole over heartfelt “aww” moments.)

Shadow Resistance is BJ’s debut work, centered around injustice, humanity and the history of racial tensions in the United States. The goal of the writing is not to anger but to make the reader think and try to find the empathy and critical thinking humanity seems to have misplaced.

When she’s not writing, she’s driving her wife insane playing Playstation 4, reminding her wife of why she married her in the first place in the form of gourmet cooking, and working to fund all three, (games, food and the wife) in the financial services industry.

In Shadow Resistance by B.J. Cyprian, Dominique 'Dom' Samuels is a reclusive computer genius with an anxiety problem caused by a tragedy 25 years ago. SARA, an artificial intelligence system of Dom’s own design, is her only preferred company. However, a man appears on her doorstep and offers her an opportunity that will force her to come out of isolation and interact with other people. School counselor Rose Jenkins is passionate about helping youths at risk stay away from drugs and violence. When her brother, Robert, is released from prison, he tells her about a mysterious group dedicated to social justice. Meanwhile, crime scene techs Layla Green and Rachel Vasquez are seeking clues to a grisly murder until they receive a cryptic message offering help in the case. These unique individuals will soon cross each other's paths and find themselves fighting for the same cause.

Shadow Resistance is a solid combination of murder mystery and political intrigue with a healthy dose of hilarity and some romance. The plot is well structured, complex, and has appropriate pacing to give the immersive quality that allows readers to relate more to the scenes and the characters. The narrative is descriptive and a number of important issues are incorporated into the storyline; prejudice, equality, justice, juvenile crimes, regressive youth justice, and education policies, LGBTQ-just to name a few. There are several plot twists that readers will love. I instantly rooted for Dom but also gravitated towards SARA, Dom’s A.I. assistant. B.J. Cyprian evokes the African-American history of civil rights movements dating back from the '60s until today, reminding people of color to embrace their individuality and fight any kind of injustice while moving forward to a better future. Overall, a substantial and commendable read.
