Sleep of Fools by Lori R. Lopez is a must-read, thought-provoking literary work. Chrono has been conditioned from childhood to conform to society’s rules. This society expects uniformity. Everyone should be an obedient and diligent worker who never questions the rules. They are encouraged to report those who they consider to show even a hint of rebellion. However, when Chrono encounters Miss Jewel, something within him shifts. He is enamored by her beautiful blue eyes and awestruck by her unique sense of style. She doesn’t conform. So, why should he? He begins to question society and realizes there is something important that they are hiding from the masses. He tries to wake others up to reality. Are his efforts in vain? Would it be better to remain sleeping the sleep of fools?

I greatly enjoyed reading Sleep of Fools by Lori R. Lopez. I appreciate and agree with the social commentary about rebelling against the system embedded in the plot. The plot twist at the end was very intriguing. This is a brief but well-paced read. Lopez did an amazing job of developing the cast of characters. I especially liked that their names were meaningful. For example, Chrono was very concerned about how his time was spent, while Will was willing to exert his will for freedom against the antagonists. I also laughed at Snail’s name because I could easily imagine him being an extremely slow worker. The dialogue was also funny and insightful at times. I highly recommend Sleep of Fools by Lori R. Lopez to everyone.
