Author Biography

Thuan Doan is an award-winning author of the Sophia Freeman series. He conceived his first middle-grade fantasy novel, Sophia Freeman and the Mysterious Fountain, during a trip to Gabriola Island, British Columbia in the summer of 2013. Then he took his work and settled in a small town of Enderby, where it’s peaceful and quiet. 4 years later, the story was complete. While book one, two, three and four are being shared with the world, he's writing and illustrating the last book of the series.

Thuan is writing under a pen name of T.X. Troan. “X” stands for Xu, his grandmother’s name who passed away. And “Troan” is a combination of his parents' names.

“No matter how this turns out, I want my family to be a part of this wonderful journey.”

Sophia Freeman and the Underground Warriors is the fifth book in the Sophia Freeman Series by T.X. Troan. Sophia Freeman and her best friend, Tim Charlan, unwittingly find themselves in the company of the ancient demon tree god, Tombermon, after falling off the highest cliff on Pandilone Island. To their surprise, however, Tombermon has lost all his memories, and they rename him Heromon. Led by the golden bugs to a secret cave, the kids and Heromon find a drawing of the powerful Untimatrium staff and a map showing the path to Rainbow Pearl. Meanwhile, Scarlon and his guards are causing havoc all over the island. To stop him, Sophia and her friends must train the Remainders in magic and sneak into Scarlon's fortress to take part in a sword hunt competition. Is the Chosen One ready to embrace her destiny?

Action-packed from start to finish, Sophia Freeman and the Underground Warriors takes you on a fantastical thrill ride you don't want to miss. Author T.X. Troan's worldbuilding is nothing short of phenomenal. Troan has crafted a vibrant fantasy world featuring a whole host of different magical creatures, adventurous quests, and nail-biting battle sequences that have you on the edge of your seat, hoping your favorite characters prevail. This is the kind of book that gets preteens and young adults into the fantasy genre. Sophia's dynamic with her friends, especially Tim, is the heart of the series. But I also enjoyed the redemption arc of Tombermon/Heromon. The author excels in maintaining a brisk pace. Each chapter reveals new surprises that keep the reader glued to the pages. Overall, it's a must-read for young fantasy fans.

Sophia Freeman and the Underground Warriors by T.X. Troan is an action-packed adventure that follows the journey of Sophia, the "Chosen One," and her friend Tim as they try to restore life on their island. The narrative begins with Sophia and Tim surviving a fall from a cliff with an ancient tree monster called Tombermon. Having lost his memory during the fall, Tombermon is convinced he's a good person and is given the name Heromon. Together, Sophia and her crew stumble upon a cave where they find clues left by the legendary inventor Ronuke that could help them defeat Scarlon, a villain who has taken over their island. According to the clues, they must find two mythical weapons called the Ultimatrium and the Rainbow Pearl. The quest for these mythical weapons leads them to new allies called the Remainders, a peaceful group of non-magical creatures. Together, they search for the mythical weapons and must train to defeat Scarlon and his army.

I was particularly impressed by how Sophia and Tim struggled with the idea of keeping Heromon's true identity a secret. It kept me guessing: 'What if Heromon regains his memory? Would he go back to being evil, or would he remain loyal to Sophia?' I was amazed by T.X. Troan's ability to use magical logic during intense action. The characters were well developed, particularly the Remainder's quest to master magic to defeat Scarlon and his army. The illustrations throughout made it easy for me to understand certain scenarios and gave me a clear view of the world of Pandilone Island. Troan has a clear writing style that uses simple and direct language. Sophia Freeman and the Underground Warriors has a really fast pace and is filled with lots of action and suspense. The book explores themes of hope, courage, and family bonds. I recommend this book to readers who are interested in fantastic adventures filled with lots of magical action.
