Magic to the rescue? Well, perhaps not. In Andrea Hyatt’s Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue, Sophie Sparrow is distraught to hear her friends, Cora and Charlie Cardinal, are suddenly homeless when a fierce storm destroys their nest. Sophie Sparrow wants to help and she needs Miss Sapphire’s magic to resolve the problem. But Miss Sapphire has flown south for the winter and can’t help. Sophie Sparrow is left to her own devices, but with the help of friends, she’s able to help Cora and Charlie Cardinal rebuild their nest. After all, as she learns, “You didn’t need magic to make things happen. You needed a kind heart,” and Sophie Sparrow has a kind heart and a brilliant mind to figure things out.

Andrea Hyatt’s picture book, Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue, is a delightful tale about what makes the best type of magic. Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills, this gem of a story has valuable lessons about community, caring, and looking out for one another. The illustrations by Nicholas Child are bright, bold, and colorful and add another dimension to the story. The plot moves quickly, following the Cardinal family’s tragedy and the friends’ determination to make things right until everyone is satisfied, and pleased with the outcome. In a world gone crazy with one disaster after another, this is a great bird-style lesson on how working together can make things better for everyone. Beautifully told and heartwarming with a touch of whimsy and subtle magic.

Sophie Sparrow and her friends move beyond sympathy to compassion in Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue by Andrea Hyatt. While sympathy feels one’s pain, compassion moves beyond that feeling and takes action to alleviate the pain. Cora Cardinal and her son, Charlie, lose their nest in a nasty thunderstorm. As a struggling, single mom, Cora is unsure what to do. Sophie Sparrow develops a plan and shares it with Sullivan. Together, they make flyers inviting everyone to help build a new nest for the Cardinals. How do many feathers working together make the workload lighter? Have you ever undertaken a project that went faster when you had help? Read this children’s picture book, illustrated by Nicholas Child, to learn how helping others will bring joy to all. It is a great feeling to know that you can always do something to help someone else.

Andrea Hyatt returns with Sophie Sparrow to help children understand the meaning of compassion and that all one needs to help others is a kind heart. Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue is based on an event outside the author’s window during and after a bad storm. Many people think it takes magic to help others, but Sophie teaches us that teamwork trumps magic. This world needs many more acts of kindness, and Sophie helps your child by showing them one way they can help others. Be sure to take the time to discuss the many faces of kindness and compassion as you read this book with and to your child. We often want to help others but don’t know what to do. Offering others the opportunity to help allows them to understand what help is needed. Never be afraid to ask for help or to offer help.

Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue by Andrea Hyatt is a picture book with a lovely story. A terrific storm has destroyed the tree that Cora and Charlie Cardinal nested in, tossing their nest to the ground. Sophie Sparrow decides to go see Miss Sapphire, the magical Blue Jay, only to find she has left for the winter and won’t return until spring. How will Sophie help her friends without Miss Sapphire? Then Sophie has a brainwave and gathers everyone together. What is Sophie’s grand idea? Will it work? Will everyone pitch in to help?

Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue by Andrea Hyatt is a cute picture book for young readers with amazing illustrations by Nicholas Child that tell their own story. Packed with animal characters, kids will love this fun book but they’ll also learn a lot along the way. This is about learning to solve problems without that magic wand we all want to wave to make things right. It’s about the true meaning of friendship and working together to reach a goal. And it also teaches that the real magic in life comes from within. If you’ve read the previous book in the Sophie Sparrow series, you’ll recognize many of the characters, but there are some new ones, too. Each character has a distinct personality and brings their own skills and brand of help to the table – just like humans do. That’s one more thing kids will learn – everyone has something to offer, no matter how small, and everyone can play their part in solving a problem. This story is sure to delight children of all ages and should be part of every school and personal library.
