Magic to the rescue? Well, perhaps not. In Andrea Hyatt’s Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue, Sophie Sparrow is distraught to hear her friends, Cora and Charlie Cardinal, are suddenly homeless when a fierce storm destroys their nest. Sophie Sparrow wants to help and she needs Miss Sapphire’s magic to resolve the problem. But Miss Sapphire has flown south for the winter and can’t help. Sophie Sparrow is left to her own devices, but with the help of friends, she’s able to help Cora and Charlie Cardinal rebuild their nest. After all, as she learns, “You didn’t need magic to make things happen. You needed a kind heart,” and Sophie Sparrow has a kind heart and a brilliant mind to figure things out.
Andrea Hyatt’s picture book, Sophie Sparrow and Friends to the Rescue, is a delightful tale about what makes the best type of magic. Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills, this gem of a story has valuable lessons about community, caring, and looking out for one another. The illustrations by Nicholas Child are bright, bold, and colorful and add another dimension to the story. The plot moves quickly, following the Cardinal family’s tragedy and the friends’ determination to make things right until everyone is satisfied, and pleased with the outcome. In a world gone crazy with one disaster after another, this is a great bird-style lesson on how working together can make things better for everyone. Beautifully told and heartwarming with a touch of whimsy and subtle magic.
