Squirrel Skip Squabble by Max Parrott is the third book in the Ruff McPaw Mystery series. Angela could never have predicted that she would be a thriving private investigator, let alone have her own business. As she helps the chief with a recent case, she finds herself involved in a murder mystery. Reginald Dean was found murdered in his mansion and Angela is determined to catch the culprit. The case gets personal when her brother becomes a suspect after his return to town. With the help of her sidekick Ruff and working alongside the chief, Angela dives headfirst into the investigation. As she tries to clear her brother’s name, she finds an injured squirrel needing rescue. After receiving the adorable moniker of P. Nutty, the squirrel provides her with an important clue that sends the case in a new direction and could bring her closer to the killer.
Angela's compassion and love for animals are central elements of her personality and help to ground the story emotionally. Through her, readers connect with the other characters and animals. Among those is Ruff McPaw who continues to be a delightful sidekick and adds cuteness while also being the perfect sleuthing partner. Her family is an important component in each mystery with her estranged brother's return expanding these dynamics in her life. The re-connection between her and William is heartfelt and an example of how well author Max Parrott uses characters to make feel-good mysteries. William as a suspect is the perfect way to make the mystery personal and deepen Angela’s involvement. Parrott does a great job of establishing character motivation through well-crafted side characters. Close attention is given to the little nuances that make for great suspects such as nervous mannerisms. The animal spotlight on the cute little squirrel (P. Nutty) is an uplifting part of the plot. Love and respect for animals with different plights are highlighted in ways that are carefully woven into the mystery. Squirrel Skip Squabble has a little bit of everything: Ruff McPaw, an adorable squirrel, and a suspenseful mystery that doesn’t miss a beat.
