Stand the Test of Time: 100 Ways for Resilience, Happiness and Success by Helen Sly is a truly motivational self-help book. As alluded to by the subtitle, this work comprises one hundred brief but thought-provoking free-verse poems. The poems read as words of wisdom and encouragement from a loved one. They distill the value of a healthy self-outlook, as well as how to properly interact with those around you. The pressures of life are not downplayed, but you are called upon to push back and not merely survive but thrive. Sly seems to champion the ideology that happiness is found through realizing and living out your life’s purpose. Hence, she advises everyone to figure out what success looks like to them.
Stand the Test of Time by Helen Sly was an enjoyable read. The central message of this work is to better yourself through a positive mindset, hard work, and perseverance. I appreciated the "to-the-point" nature of the poems. The tone was conversational and nonjudgmental. Although some of the advice may come off as platitudes, I think they serve as helpful reminders of things we know but are not always keen to put into practice. For instance, the entry on forgiving those who hurt you to attain inner peace is not groundbreaking information, but for those struggling with this issue, it might be the right advice at the right time. My favorite poem was Great Decision, which counsels the reader to weigh up both the short and long-term consequences of their choices. I recommend this book to everyone.
