Recently reunited with her mother after several years, Mattie believes that a semblance of normalcy is returning to her life after the harrowing events that led to her father's death so long ago. She buries herself in her work with the K-9 unit and the blossoming relationship she has with Cole. But when her mother once again disappears without a trace and a mysterious message leads her unit to a body in the woods, Mattie is certain that an adversary from her past has been resurrected and is hellbent on revenge. Can she stop them before it is too late or will the sins of her father finally consume what remains of their family? Only time will tell but, unlike in the past, this time she is prepared for what may come in Margaret Mizushima's Standing Dead.
Payback is on the menu in Margaret Mizushima's latest offering but unlike the typical expectation of a direct assault on your senses with blunt-force action scenes, Mizushima has opted for the sedate approach by spending considerable time fleshing out her characters and breathing life into them with banter that is both deep and laced with intrigue. The storyline reads like a slow-burning oil lamp, immersing you in a story that is heavy on both the emotional and adventure components. The way Mizushima places clues subtly throughout the story forces even the most casual of minds to seek out what is not so obviously hidden in plain sight. With mature emotional and romantic subplots weaving together to create the perfect murder mystery, a unique reading experience is guaranteed when you pick up Standing Dead.
