State of Georgia versus Clevon Jamel Jenkins by Robert Michael Kelly is the true-crime saga of a young man who was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Clevon Jamel Jenkins, a chubby seventeen-year-old Black man with a passion for singing and composing rap music, never anticipated that a simple drive with friends to Hodges Grocery Store in Riceboro would become the defining moment of his life. Jenkins had no idea that his friends, Cedrick and Maurice, planned to rob and kill Mr. Hodges. Although Jenkins maintained he did not know their intent, he was swept up in the crime’s aftermath. Despite repeatedly saying he was innocent to his attorneys and begging to testify, Jenkins was silenced. He did not get a fair trial, even though there was significant evidence that he was innocent.
State of Georgia versus Clevon Jamel Jenkins by Robert Michael Kelly was an interesting and complex read. Themes of justice, systemic failure, and bias within the American legal system were explored. The writing style was engaging, and the complex procedural elements were explained so that someone like me, who has no legal knowledge, could understand. The amount of information and detail was not overwhelming and could be understood if you spent time processing everything. The footnotes explained everything in detail and were easily understood. There was even a list of cases and proceedings filed on behalf of Jenkins. The book was excellently planned and well-written. After reading this book, I wondered whether justice was truly served and whether Jenkins deserves to remain in prison.
