C.A. Gray’s Strange Currents follows Aurora Pickering after a broken betrothal in Beverly Hills, and a cousin’s betrayal sends her onto a rain-slick mountain road near coastal Maple Bay. A violent crash should leave Aurora paralyzed, but Irish paramedic Caleb Grace touches her in the wreckage, and her body heals before the hospital can explain what happened. Stranded in town, Aurora becomes “Rori” at Beansprout Inn, where widow Melanie Astor gives her a kitchen job, and Maple Bay’s women pull her into local life. Caleb tries to remain unseen, but other impossible recoveries around town point back to him. As Aurora begins to understand his gift, a Chicago crime boss searching for Caleb sends a reporter toward Maple Bay, turning a private miracle into a dangerous secret.
C.A. Gray’s Strange Currents is a really well-executed paranormal romance. Maple Bay feels like the kind of small town where you want to spend the weekend, and it is as much a character as the people who live there. The best part is Aurora, who is genuinely likeable because she knows about Caleb’s gift and is willing to keep his secret, going as far as warning Bill at the co-op when a Chicago reporter starts asking questions, then searches online posts because she wants to keep Caleb safe. Caleb is excellent, too, especially when he heals the boy at the fall festival and runs because fear has trained him to disappear. I love, love, love Grandma Lois, whose blunt advice on forgiveness arrives exactly when Aurora needs someone outside Beverly Hills. Well written and absorbing, readers who enjoy supernatural small-town romance will adore this book. Very highly recommended.
