In Strays by Thomas A. Marks, Matt is thinking back on where it all began. His goal in life was to find a cure for cancer and to win the Noble Prize. However, he lost the funding for his cancer research due to dogmatic clashes. Ten years previously he held a position as a toxicologist with Johnupton Pharmaceutical Company in Grand Rapids. After repeated requests for assistance he agreed to investigate problems facing kennel owner, Jane Brookmore. After the breeder had constructed a new kennel the dogs began having breeding problems; dogs were dying, pups were born deformed and the owner did not look very healthy. Something was seriously wrong, there was a lack of worms in the soil, birds no longer seemed to inhabit the area, frogs no longer inhabited the pond and there were dead moles lying on the ground. Could synthetic chemicals and pharmaceuticals be destroying life?

Stray was written by author Thomas A. Marks. In this brilliant book he offers readers an entertaining read and a dire warning. While I enjoyed reading this book I quickly recognized the author’s purpose was also to inform and warn readers that we are destroying life and our planet. There are four main characters and each one represents a different attitude or reaction to the theory that cancer, as well as many other illnesses, are caused by our environment and the things we are doing to it. Strays is well written, inspiring and appealing. The characters are true to life for we each react differently to such warnings. Thomas A Marks brings his expertise in both chemistry and biochemistry to this tale. Let us hope and pray that his warnings are heard and taken seriously.
