Summer: With Collateral Damage by Denise Ann Stock is a captivating story that follows Alyse Johnson, a lawyer from an affluent family who lives in an upscale condo along Jacksonville Beach. With plans to enjoy the summer with her best friend and have fun after becoming single, Alyse faces disappointment when a hurricane is announced heading their way. She finds shelter with the Connor family and starts to hit it off with her best friend's brother. However, things take a drastic turn when they discover burglars targeting the beach houses, leading to violence, deaths, and life-changing consequences. Alyse’s life is turned upside down as she faces personal losses, media scrutiny, and emotional turmoil. The characters must confront not only the chaos unleashed by the storm and the criminal activity but also their struggles with love, loyalty, and betrayal.
Summer: With Collateral Damage is the fourth book in The Summer Series by Denise Ann Stock. It can be read as a standalone and introduces intriguing characters with interesting backstories. The book intricately weaves themes of resilience, trauma, and the quest for understanding in the face of life's unpredictability, inviting readers to reflect on the fragile nature of safety and the profound impact of disaster on personal journeys. It also emphasizes the importance of compassion and understanding for victims of any crime. The story is unpredictable with a big plot twist at the end. The author's skillful foreshadowing of the twist demonstrates a masterful grasp of storytelling, making the narrative engaging and thought-provoking. Such nuances invite deeper reflection on the characters’ journeys and our understanding of safety and vulnerability in an unpredictable world. This story is not yet over, more is to come, and I look forward to reading more about these characters and from this author. Overall, this is great work.
