Sunrise in Saigon by Patrick Greenwood is a historical romance novel that follows Jack Kendall and Linh Ngo as they navigate unhappy marriages and deteriorating health. Intrigued by Vietnam since his youth, Jack's fascination with the country is rekindled after finishing his service in the U.S. Marine Corps and pursuing a career in cybersecurity. Through his research, he discovers a heartwarming story of a couple who reunited after being separated during the fall of Saigon. Inspired, Jack embarks on a cycling tour of Vietnam, where he encounters the nation's beauty and its struggles with poverty, graft, and human trafficking. Along the way Jack finds love with Linh, their connection leading them to leave their current relationships behind and embark on an unforgettable romance, forever symbolized by the sunrise in Saigon.
Sunrise in Saigon by Patrick Greenwood does a really great job of conveying the impact of war and how it carries through and shapes who we ultimately become. I really, really liked Jack and his dynamic with Linh. There's a restaurant scene where they are discussing what to order and everything ends in “my love”, which is just so sweet. Jack then thinks, “This is living.” It certainly is. It comes at a heavy personal cost though, and at one point he is sitting on a bench on the verge of a panic attack over what he has done and what it might cost him. Other characters, like Forest, were well developed but shady motives, however understandable to a degree, didn't sit well with me. I do think that Greenwood is an author embarking on what will likely be a promising writing career, especially when weaving together tales of modern-day issues on top of the rubble of yesteryear. Very highly recommended.
