Sweet Rescue by Alex Friedrichs is a children’s adventure book about a caterpillar named Hungry Joe. He sets out one morning with a growling stomach and food on his mind, when a leaf lands on his nose. A sweet smell catches his nose and leads him down a slide and straight into a golden berry pie. Hungry Joe is so focused on eating this delicious pie that he doesn’t realize until it's too late that he’s now stuck. Meanwhile, he has no clue that Sir Raven has set his sights on having him for a nice morning snack. This sets the stage for his sister Becky Butterfly, Bumble the Bee, and all the bugs in the community to join forces for a sweet rescue. But will they get to Hungry Joe before Sir Raven does?
There is so much to love about Sweet Rescue. The illustrations that Kayne Carter has created are very colorful and lively. The storyline conveys a lesson in the midst of all the trouble and chaos. It teaches young readers not to allow greed or distractions to put them in harm's way or get them caught up in a sticky situation. It also teaches the importance of teamwork from friends and family, especially in times of need or trouble. Alex Friedrichs has created such an adorable story in Sweet Rescue that is perfect for a classroom reading hour or as a bedtime story. Readers who like insect-centered stories such as The Rescue Party by Nick Butterworth or The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle will most enjoy and appreciate Sweet Rescue.
